What a spectacle! A cultural celebration and a competition, honoring Polynesian heritage and the pinnacle of Va’a. And what an amazing way to experience the islands, whether you’re in the race or cheering on the racers from a nearby boat.
The Hawaiki Nui Va’a is the most emblematic sporting event in the South Pacific. Here, more than 2,000 paddlers, teams and individuals, go stroke for stroke for 80 miles. Three days of exciting competition between the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora. (“Hawaiki” is the historical name for the island of Raiatea, the original home of the Polynesians.)
This prestigious race attracts thousands of Tahitians and sports enthusiasts from across the South Pacific and beyond. Hundreds await the finish at fabled Matira Beach, in Bora Bora. This race is a testament to endurance, teamwork, and Polynesian paddling skills, showcasing expert racers while reminding us that Polynesians were the pioneers of paddling in the South Pacific.
A Thrilling Showdown in 2024
If last year’s race is any indication, this year’s Hawaiki Nui Va’a promises to be electrifying. In 2024, three potential teams went into the final day vying for the title of champions. After two of the three stages of the race, Team OPT was holding onto an 8-second lead over Shell Va’a. Both Team Air Tahiti and Team Huahine had an outside chance of overtaking the leaders. The final 40 minutes was as thrilling as it gets—a head-to-head battle to the finish line, with Team Air Tahiti edging out Team OPT. However, Team OPT maintained 1st place due to great times in stages 1 and 2 and repeated as champions. Team Air Tahiti came in 2nd and Team Shell Va’a finished 4th. This year, will it be Team OPT repeating or Team Shell Va’a’s revenge?
