When ARE Tahiti decided to offer paddling clinics in St. Augustine, Florida (May 1, May 2, and May 4) around the May 3 “Mission 50: Paddling for Purpose” event, little did they know these clinics would fill up faster than a V6 Matahina.

Forty paddlers signed up over the three days, leaving other paddlers, well, “up a creek without a paddle!”

Not so fast, said ARE Tahiti, which is on a mission to grow outrigger paddling and doesn’t want to turn anyone away. So they turned to master coach, Lewis Laughlin, whom they are already sponsoring for the clinics, and asked him to extend private lessons to paddlers who’ll miss the clinics but don’t want to miss out on Laughlin’s insights—on technique, stroke, and efficiency. Different strokes for different folks!

Laughlin, from Tahiti, has spent decades as an elite paddler and coach, bringing out the best in hundreds of paddlers, from novices to elite paddlers, including helping world-class paddlers reach new levels in international competitions. He is one of three master coaches sponsored by ARE Tahiti, which is dedicated to providing paddling instruction at events throughout the year.

Missing an opportunity to learn from a master paddler and coach would be a major huli!
